Get Covered in 2018

Covered California is the source for health care coverage for 1.4 million people in our state. As California’s health insurance marketplace established under the Affordable Care Act, Covered California was created to make health coverage more affordable and easier to purchase for individuals and small businesses. Covered California is the only place where an individual can get financial assistance to help pay for their health insurance.

The Covered California enrollment period runs from November 1, 2017, to January 31, 2018. Here’s what you need to know to get covered:

What do I need to get started?

If you or your family members are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or legal immigrants in the state, you are required to have health insurance. To apply for coverage with Covered California, you will need to supply documentation to verify certain information, including your identity, immigration status or citizenship, and income. A full list of documentation needed is provided on the Covered California website.

Outside of this annual open enrollment period, you can only apply for health insurance during a qualifying life event, such as the birth of a child, marriage, divorce, loss of a job, or a move to California. See a full list of qualifying events here.

And don’t forget about Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal provides free or low-cost health insurance coverage to low-income Californians. If you are eligible for the Medi-Cal program, you can register at any time of the year.

What are my coverage options?

Covered California offers a range of health insurance plans so that you can choose the plan and level of coverage that best meet your needs and budget. Through CoveredCA.com, you can find the right plan for you — and even find out if you are eligible for financial assistance to reduce health care costs.   You can also search for health care providers – doctors and hospitals – that are available in each of the insurance plans.

We know that health insurance can be complicated. If you, your family members, or your friends need health coverage, free and confidential assistance is available from Certified Insurance Agents, Certified Enrollment Counselors or county eligibility workers. Find the help you need here or by calling (800) 300-1506.

Sounds great! How do I get started?

The application is open November 1, 2017, through January 31, 2018. You can get started at any time on the Covered California website. You will need documentation, so start filling out the paperwork early — you can save your application and return at any time to continue the process.

If you have any other questions about signing up, eligibility, costs, or the application process, visit CoveredCA.com.

I have coverage through my workplace. Anything I need to do?

Fall is open enrollment time for many of us, and it can be confusing.  If you have private insurance provided by your employer or are eligible for Medicare (age 65+), you must check with your plan administrator for specific enrollment information and deadlines. Health coverage is available through Covered California for people who don’t have affordable health care options through their employer or through Medicare.  Covered California’s open enrollment period ends January 31, 2018.

I want to help others get the coverage they need!

Great!  Having health insurance helps people stay healthy.  It also provides important protection to everyone when life takes an unexpected turn.

Please share this important information with family and friends, and let them know they can receive financial assistance to make health care coverage within reach.  Nearly nine out of every 10 Covered California members – more than 1.2 million Californians – have already received some level of financial help.

The time is now.  Take a moment to share this toolkit on Twitter and Facebook — and help ensure everyone that needs coverage can access it.
